Italy’s Foreign Minister canceled a scheduled visit to the United States. This decision followed comments made by President Donald Trump about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
During an interview with Italy’s La7 broadcaster, Trump claimed that Meloni, a close ideological ally, had “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 summit. “She wanted a picture with me so badly,” Trump stated. “I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.”
Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, labeled Trump’s remarks as “serious and offensive,” considering them an insult to the entire country. Tajani was originally scheduled to visit the U.S. on the upcoming Sunday and Monday.
Prime Minister Meloni quickly responded via social media. She expressed her shock and clarified that Trump’s account was fabricated. “Neither I nor Italy ever beg,” Meloni asserted.
