Israeli Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon Escalate Tensions

Early Monday, Israel’s air force conducted airstrikes on a village in southern Lebanon, resulting in at least 12 fatalities and injuries among civilians. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that among the deceased were two children and four women, while eight individuals sustained injuries, including three children.

These strikes mark a new escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, despite a truce established two months ago. The Israeli military claims these actions were in retaliation for drone attacks by Hezbollah targeted at Israeli troops.

In Kfar Rumman, a strike claimed the lives of 11 people in a building, while another strike on a car killed a paramedic and wounded two others. One of the injured children, Mustafa Farhat, lost his parents and is now cared for by his grandmother in a Nabatiyeh hospital.

Residents, including Fouad Chakaron and Saleh Medlej, expressed their fears and determination to remain in their homes despite ongoing threats. The Israeli military also issued warnings and conducted strikes in nearby areas, further increasing tensions.

Additional incidents saw Israeli troops lightly wounded in a separate exchange involving a Hezbollah member near the Beaufort castle, which resulted in the militant’s death. Recent airstrikes have led to destruction in southern Lebanon, including an empty hospital.

This violence follows Israel’s release of Lebanese prisoners under a deal aimed at resolving humanitarian issues, which is meant to facilitate the disarmament of Hezbollah, a goal yet to be achieved. Disputes over the agreement and continued military actions reflect the strained relations between Lebanon and Israel.

Kfar Rumman’s mayor, Abdullah Farhat, criticized the ongoing violence, expressing dissatisfaction with the Lebanon-Israel framework agreement and its impact on local communities.
