Iranian Officials Attend Funeral Amid Rising Tensions

Key figures in Iran surfaced on Sunday to attend the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Their emergence displayed renewed confidence amid rising calls for the assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The gathering saw hundreds of thousands in Tehran, a scene unimaginable during the Iran conflict’s beginning. Airstrikes on February 28 claimed the lives of Khamenei, his family, and officials. Israel targeted visible figures during the conflict, using public visibility to mark targets.

Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, remains unseen, reportedly in hiding due to injuries from the strikes. Israel has threatened his life as he leads negotiations with the U.S. to end the conflict and address disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Ziba Naderi, 42, a nurse attending the funeral, urged unity under Mojtaba Khamenei’s guidance.

Funeral Prayers and Calls for Action

Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, a 97-year-old cleric, performed the prayers at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla for the deceased Khamenei and his family. Present were Khamenei’s sons Masoud, Meysam, and Mostafa, marking their first public appearance since the conflict.

Among the attendees were influential military and political figures, including Revolutionary Guard head Gen. Ahmad Vahidi. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, and Quds Force leader Esmail Qaani also attended. Posters around the venue demanded retribution against Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Poet Mohammad Rasouli, speaking at the event, incited chants against America and Israel. His address posed a direct threat to Trump, escalating the rhetoric against him.

Heightened Threats Against Trump

Concurrently, Trump delivered remarks in Washington, D.C., highlighting past U.S. military successes, mentioning Venezuela and Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian mourners demanded retaliation, some calling for Trump’s assassination. Gholamreza Sabooni, a 29-year-old grocery worker, vocally supported avenging Khamenei’s death.

U.S. federal authorities have monitored Iranian threats since Trump ordered the 2020 killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Iran has consistently dismissed claims of planning Trump’s assassination, despite long-standing hard-line rhetoric targeting him. Trump has threatened severe reprisals against Iran, including destruction of its civilization.

Funeral Impacts Diplomatic Efforts

Khamenei’s casket will be transported through Iran and Iraq, with major security precautions in place. Tehran has shut down significant areas for mourning before his burial in Mashhad on Thursday.

Official attendance numbers remain undisclosed. Public events continue across Iran in tribute. Negotiations to conclude the conflict remain paused until the funeral concludes. A substantial turnout might impact Iran’s diplomatic leverage, particularly with ongoing concerns of potential Israeli aggression.

“Our foreign policy should protect our leader’s honor and demand accountability from those responsible for harm,” stated mourner Mohammad Reza Sharifi.
