Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is experiencing renewed violence in the country’s Kurdish-majority western region. This development raises questions about the potential escalation of a long-standing Kurdish insurgency, coinciding with delicate negotiations between Iran and Washington.

Recent events in Iran’s borderlands have drawn attention due to the significant role Kurdish opposition groups played during the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Now, some Kurdish voices fear exposure as Washington and Tehran resume diplomatic discussions.

In recent days, Iranian security forces have encountered multiple attacks and clashes in western and northwestern Iran. According to The Jerusalem Post, four Iranian security personnel were killed and others injured in two separate armed incidents on Tuesday. These events, reported by Seth J. Frantzman and sourced from Iraq’s Shafaq News, have highlighted the ongoing tensions.

The Jerusalem Post also reported a gun attack at a police checkpoint in Baneh, resulting in the death of two police officers and injuries to three others, including a young child. The clashes have spread across cities like Paveh, Marivan, and Mahabad, as cited by Rojhelat.Info, a Kurdish-focused media outlet.

An attack in Paveh was claimed by Xore Heva, a lesser-known armed group, as retaliation against Iran’s crackdown following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022. Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died after detention by Iran’s morality police, accused of violating the hijab mandate.

Kurds, one of the largest stateless groups in the Middle East spread across Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, have long accused Iran of political repression and forced assimilation, which Iranian authorities view as separatist threats.

Jino Victoria Doabi, from the Kurdish-led human rights organization Hiwa, commented on the escalating violence: ‘It appears like an escalation, with initial attacks framed by Kurdish forces in response to protest suppression.’

Doabi expressed dissatisfaction among Kurds regarding IRGC’s attacks on Kurdish parties and fighters without international reaction.
