A pioneering study in the United States indicates that invasive mold infections may be a significant, yet often overlooked, threat, with potentially fatal outcomes. The research uncovered approximately 450 cases in hospitals around Atlanta over a five-year period, with around a third of these patients dying during their hospital stay.
The study was released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to better understand the prevalence of these infections. Currently, there is no mandate for doctors to report such illnesses. As Dr. Jeremy Gold, the study’s lead author, noted, this marks the first time an estimate like this has been available.
Dr. Gold pointed out the importance of gaining such insights now due to the possibility that the issue may escalate. Mold exposure tends to rise in the aftermath of natural disasters like hurricanes and floods, which are occurring more frequently due to climate change, as shown in prior research. In agreement, Dr. Jeffrey Jenks, an infectious disease researcher at Duke University, stated that the incidence of fungal infections might increase as a result of climate change.
Additionally, Dr. Gold emphasized the increasing number of older individuals who become more vulnerable to these diseases. Invasive mold diseases are caused by certain mold species. Infection typically occurs when individuals inhale mold spores, but spores can also enter the body through cuts, wounds, or contaminated medical devices.
While mold spores are not harmful to the majority of people, they can pose serious health risks to certain groups, including the elderly, cancer patients, and those with compromised immune systems. CDC researchers previously estimated that over 15,000 hospitalizations annually may be linked to invasive mold disease. To gain local insights, the study collaborated with four hospitals and their associated outpatient clinics in the Atlanta area to track potential cases from 2020 to 2024.
The team initially identified nearly 1,000 potential cases but refined the list to about 450 after excluding patients who displayed exposure signs but did not meet the criteria for invasive mold disease. It was noted that hospitals might expect 3 to 5 cases per year for every 100 inpatient beds, with larger academic hospitals experiencing higher rates due to more complex cases.
Many patients had weakened immune systems, while others had been debilitated by COVID-19. Exposure to mold typically occurs within hospitals or healthcare facilities, although the study did not determine the initial exposure for each patient.
While the findings from Atlanta may not directly apply to other regions across the United States, where mold could be more or less problematic, they offer hospital administrators a preliminary framework for assessing the cases they observe. Dr. Gold suggested this could help identify whether the observed numbers are expected or indicative of an outbreak.
Dr. Jenks highlighted the study’s findings as “valuable” and suggested that similar studies conducted in different U.S. regions could provide further insights.
