Inside the Deal to Drop Trump’s $10 Billion Suit Against the I.R.S.

Negotiations on Trump’s Lawsuit

A group of Trump-loyal lawyers held discussions to address the $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS. These talks were confidential, and some senior White House officials were reportedly caught off guard by the developing agreement.

Key Figures in the Deal

The negotiation involved President Trump’s private lawyers and the Justice Department. The Justice Department was under the leadership of Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, who had previously served as Trump’s criminal defense lawyer. Boris Epshteyn, a former client of Blanche, played a significant role, coordinating discussions among Trump, his attorneys, and Justice Department officials.

Details of the Agreement

Despite not fulfilling Trump’s initial lawsuit demand to redirect Treasury funds to himself, the settlement was advantageous to him and his allies. The deal set up a $1.8 billion fund to compensate those perceived as harmed by government “weaponization.” This fund possibly included individuals charged with crimes related to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Additionally, the agreement released Trump and his businesses from potentially costly IRS audits.
