Influencers Impact on U.S. Open and Mental Strength Training in Tennis

Mental Strength Training in Tennis

Jason Stacy, the performance coach for tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, recently appeared on ‘Fox & Friends Weekend.’ He shared insights into the mental strength drills that help keep Sabalenka composed during high-pressure matches. These exercises are designed to help athletes manage their emotions and reactions when the stakes are high. The show’s hosts participated in live demonstrations of these drills, highlighting their role in enhancing coordination and reaction times.

Influencers at the U.S. Open

As the U.S. Open attracts many influencers, there is debate over their impact on the event. While influencers can expand the reach and influence of tennis, their participation sometimes crosses the line. A recent incident at Arthur Ashe Stadium exemplified this tension. During a Women’s Singles match on Day Three of the 2026 US Open, the chair umpire Kader Nouni had to intervene. Naomi Osaka was about to serve when Nouni addressed a disturbance caused by a suite full of influencers. He asked the group to take their seats, underscoring the potential disruption posed by such attendees.

Viral videos from the event depict influencers using bright lights to capture content during matches and recording promotional segments in suites. These activities highlight the growing presence of media-savvy individuals at major sports events.

The Role of Content Creators

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has actively engaged with this trend by credentialing influencers as media. Starting with 54 influencers in 2025, the number has risen to approximately 100 in 2026, according to USTA’s director of media operations Jeanmarie Daly. The initiative aims to offer diverse coverage by leveraging both traditional media and content creators.

Despite their potential for distraction, influencers can reach different audiences, thus broadening the tournament’s appeal. Thus, incorporating influencers into media operations reflects an effort to adapt to modern communication landscapes.

Naomi Osaka ultimately won her slightly delayed match against Anastasia Zakharova. This incident raises questions about balancing traditional tennis etiquette with evolving media practices.
