Ian Happ’s Heartfelt Gesture at Wrigley Field

During what might be Ian Happ’s final regular-season home game at Wrigley Field, he created a memorable moment by tossing a unique memento into the bleachers. A video from the Cubs’ game against the Miami Marlins showcases Happ, a seasoned 10-year Cubs veteran, sending a personalized baseball into the famous Wrigley outfield bleachers, above its ivy-covered walls.

The recipient was Jeff Gorski, also known as “Bleacher Jeff.” Happ’s gift was no ordinary baseball. It was wrapped tightly in rubber bands and contained three hundred-dollar bills. Along with the cash, Happ had signed the ball with a message in blue marker: “Thank you for 10 incredible years, for the positivity and unwavering support. Y’all are the best fans in sports! BEERS ON ME!” Gorski caught the ball wearing Happ’s jersey, having attended every Cubs home game of the season.

Gorski believes Happ intentionally aimed the ball at him, saying, “This has been an ongoing tradition the last few years. He knows that I’m there all the time and knows who should be getting beers, who the regulars are.” The tradition began about five years ago, with Happ occasionally giving fans this special token of appreciation. While each ball comes with a note of thanks, the $300 amount was unprecedented.

In another memorable moment, Cubs fans saw Happ celebratorily congratulated by his teammates in the dugout after scoring during the sixth inning. Reflecting on catching the gift, Gorski expressed, “I was really emotional. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt like that at Wrigley.” Since 2017, Happ has built a connection with bleacher fans, making his potential departure poignant.

Following the generous gesture, Gorski and fellow bleacher bums celebrated with beers funded by Happ’s gift. The money covered approximately 16 drinks, shared among the dedicated fans who attended numerous games that season.

After the team’s win, Happ faced the bleachers, acknowledging the fans with a heartfelt salute. Gorski reflected, “Everyone knows he’s been a big part of this culture and franchise for the last few years. It’s a big moment. We all felt the weight of it.”
