2 weeks ago 0

The Carolina Hurricanes inched closer to claiming their first Stanley Cup in two decades by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in Game 5 of the Finals. This victory, marked by key performances from Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho, gives the Hurricanes a 3-1 series lead. They will play Game 6 in Las Vegas, aiming for the championship.

Second Period Surge

In the second period, Carolina jumped ahead as Svechnikov and Aho turned a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 advantage. Svechnikov scored during a power play at 11:58 with a pass from Shayne Gostisbehere. Soon after, Aho added another goal, bolstering the Hurricanes’ lead.

Despite Vegas previously outscoring Carolina 9-1 in second periods, this time the Hurricanes found the edge they needed.

Game Highlights

The first period ended in a 1-1 draw following goals from Vegas’ Pavel Dorofeyev and Carolina’s Jordan Staal. Staal’s incredible playoff run positions him as a top contender for the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Staal tied the NHL record for the longest goal streak in the Stanley Cup Final at five games, a feat matched by NHL legends.

Key Players and Injuries

Golden Knights’ William Karlsson returned from injury earlier in the series but was hurt in the second period of Game 5. His status affects the Knights’ lineup, potentially shifting Tomas Hertl to center.

On the Hurricanes’ side, Brandon Bussi made 23 saves, marking his second consecutive playoff win with Frederik Andersen out. Coach Rod Brind’Amour suggested Andersen was available, yet called up Amir Miftakhov from the AHL.

Eichel’s Offensive Struggles

Jack Eichel’s struggles continued, despite setting up Dorofeyev’s initial goal. Vegas shifted tactics, adding Mitch Marner to Eichel’s line, yet offensive results remained minimal.

Carolina’s Power Play Breakthrough

Carolina entered with an average power play but scored six power-play goals between Games 2 and 5. Shayne Gostisbehere described the success as simplifying their approach and capitalizing on opportunities.

Dorofeyev Finds His Form

After a scoring drought, Dorofeyev notched two key goals in Game 5, reigniting his playoff performance. He delivered an early lead with a power-play goal and closed the gap in the third period.
