The carcass of a humpback whale, known as ‘Timmy’ or ‘Hope’, has been pulled onto a beach in Anholt, Denmark. This follows months of public interest in Germany where the whale repeatedly became stranded in the Baltic Sea.
Germans first spotted the whale on March 3, and it had been monitored closely with media updates about its health. Unfortunately, the whale was found dead on May 14, near the island of Anholt, in the Kattegat strait, which connects the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. This event marked the end of extensive rescue efforts aimed at returning the whale to its natural Atlantic Ocean habitat.
On May 2, there was a final attempt to transport the whale to the North Sea. It was moved on a barge, in hopes of guiding it back to its home waters. However, the mammal did not survive.
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency has announced plans to examine the whale carcass next week to determine the cause of death. Meanwhile, Danish news outlet ‘News5’ streamed video footage on Saturday of the dead whale being hauled onto shore by a truck.
The reason for the whale’s presence in the Baltic Sea remains unclear. Experts suggest it might have become lost while chasing a shoal of herring or during migration.
