House Republican Criticizes Funding for Trump’s Arch Proposal

Idaho Representative Mike Simpson, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, is opposing President Donald Trump’s use of government funds for a proposed triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery. This stance marks a rare public disagreement within the GOP over one of the administration’s prominent Washington projects.

Simpson’s Concerns

Simpson clearly rejected the idea of allocating Pentagon dollars to the arch, following Trump’s suggestion that it could serve military functions by accommodating drones, snipers, and ammunition. He stated, “There’s a lot of things that we need the military funding for—in fact, we’re short on military funding right now.” When asked about the Defense Department funding the project, Simpson added, “If it was my choice, I wouldn’t put any of that money into the arch.”

The administration continues its plans for the 250-foot monument at Memorial Circle, between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, despite legal challenges and funding questions.

GOP Reactions

Simpson’s remarks are notable as they come from an influential figure in federal spending and reflect a rare Republican divergence from Trump’s vision. The president’s proposal is a major construction project described as a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Trump has envisioned it as a landmark rivaling structures in Paris, Rome, and London.

He emphasized the need for congressional approval if appropriated funds are used, stating, “I hope if they decide to do it, that they would come to Congress and ask for an appropriation for it if they’re going to use appropriated dollars to do it.”

Similarly, veterans groups and congressional Democrats have raised concerns about the project’s authorization and potential taxpayer funding.

The White House remains committed to advancing the project, despite criticism. Spokesman Davis Ingle defended the arch, asserting that it will become an iconic landmark enhancing the Arlington National Cemetery experience for veterans and visitors. He stated it would honor American heroes and highlight the nation’s history.

The announcement fueled debates over additional approvals or congressional authorization needed for construction. The White House cited the Commission of Fine Arts’ approval, with further review by the National Capital Planning Commission ongoing.

Simpson also criticized the administration on an unrelated issue – press restrictions. He opposed restrictions on news organizations and defended the media’s access, saying, “The press is what keeps us honest.”
