The 1934 Union Stock Yards Fire
On this date in 1934, Chicago experienced the second-biggest fire in its history. The fire destroyed almost 90% of the Union Stock Yards, seriously injuring 50 firefighters and killing hundreds of cattle. “Big Jim” O’Leary’s gambling establishment was also a casualty of the blaze.
Auto Racing Milestones
In 1935, the Midwest Auto Racing Association held its inaugural car race at Soldier Field. This iconic venue later hosted its first NASCAR race in the Grand National of 1956.
Political Scandal of 1971
Alderman Fred Hubbard vanished with $100,000 from the Chicago Plan in 1971. The embezzled funds were part of a federally funded jobs program he managed. Hubbard fell into the hands of the FBI in 1972 and eventually served a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to embezzlement in 1973. His later life saw further controversy involving a teaching position and a suspension of his taxi license.
Plans for Soldier Field in 1982
In 1982, the Chicago Park District proposed a $20 million dome project for Soldier Field. Park Board President Raymond Simon emphasized the potential financial benefits of increased events at the field. Nonetheless, the Tribune Editorial Board warned against placing the financial burden on taxpayers.
