The home of Marjorie Johnson, a celebrated baker who gained national fame, is on the market. Known as the ‘Blue Ribbon Baker,’ Johnson passed away last year at 106. Her property, built in 1968 and untouched by modern renovations, serves as a ‘time capsule’ of its era.
The Journey of a Baking Icon
Marjorie Johnson of Robbinsdale, Minnesota began her journey in competitive baking at age 55. Her first foray into the 1974 Minnesota State Fair with four entries won her three ribbons. Her passion led her to win over 3,000 ribbons at state and county fairs, ultimately becoming a familiar face on national TV shows such as ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.’ Her fame also led to a cookbook foreword by Rosie O’Donnell and a special award named after her at the Minnesota State Fair.
This was my mom’s dream house. She spent countless hours going through and making sure everything was just how she wanted.
A Glimpse Into the Time Capsule
The 5,100-square-foot house located on Crystal Lake showcases original fixtures and a custom kitchen tailored for Johnson. Marjorie meticulously chose everything, ensuring her space was perfect for baking and family life. The kitchen features low countertops to suit her 4 feet, 9 inches stature, along with abundant cabinets and extra freezers.
The home boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms, and an indoor pool. Other features include a second kitchen, family room, and a three-season room with lake views. Shag carpets, floral wallpaper, and other 1960s touches maintain its historical charm.
A Lasting Legacy
Her son, Steve, reminisced about her energetic routine, including daily swims until her 80s. The house’s listing highlights its well-maintained condition with vintage elements like a chrome finish and fully functional fixtures. Real estate agent Jeanne LeVasseur describes the home as a ‘blue-ribbon house,’ reflecting Johnson’s legacy.
Listed at $665,000, the home has attracted multiple offers. The family seeks a buyer who will cherish it as much as Johnson did. Steve Wheaton noted, ‘The whole house was filled with love and the aroma of baking.’
Johnson’s positive approach to life extended beyond baking. ‘Think positive,’ she advised, believing in the power of starting each day with a promise of joy.
