Darron Lee, a former NFL linebacker, is facing severe legal consequences following a grand jury indictment in Hamilton County, Tennessee. The former first-round draft pick, known for his time with the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Gabriela Carvalho Perpétuo.
Lee, previously arrested on February 6, 2025, faces accusations involving a violent domestic incident. He has been charged with both murder and tampering with evidence. The case has been marked as a potential capital punishment case, with Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp highlighting its eligibility for the death penalty. However, the decision to pursue this penalty remains pending as the case progresses.
According to investigative reports, Lee allegedly consulted ChatGPT in an attempt to fabricate a crime scene suggesting Perpétuo’s death resulted from a fall in the shower. Prosecutors have dismissed the tampering charge, focusing solely on the murder aspect.
Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Lockhart, who was among the first responders, described an extensively violent scene upon arrival. Blood was found throughout the residence, along with shattered glass and signs of an attempt to clean the crime scene with bleach wipes and other cleaning supplies.
The autopsy revealed grave injuries sustained by Perpétuo, including severe brain trauma, a broken neck, multiple bruises, stab wounds, and bite marks. The medical examiner ruled blunt force trauma as the cause of death, contradicting Lee’s initial claim that she fell in the shower.
Lee’s previous run-ins with law enforcement include a 2023 incident in Ohio where he was involved in an altercation. He also has a past conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Florida and was on probation during the Tennessee incident. Authorities reported that he violated probation terms by relocating without approval.
This case forms part of a wider issue in the NFL’s offseason, with several players facing accusations or legal action for domestic violence. The NFL has not provided a comment on these ongoing matters.
An arraignment date in the Hamilton County Criminal Court has yet to be confirmed for Lee’s murder indictment. His NFL career concluded after the 2020 season.
