Highland sophomore infielder Nate Phillips is drawing attention with his impressive performance on the baseball field. Expectations have surrounded him, especially since Sam Michel, the Trojans’ new coach and former assistant, made it a point to connect with Phillips two years ago.
In today’s world of guys bouncing around and going to different schools, when you’re a talented player, the whispers all start,
Michel stated. Rumors suggested Phillips might leave Highland, prompting Michel to build a strong relationship with him. Michel recalls visiting Phillips frequently as an eighth grader and his remarkable contributions to the Senior Babe Ruth team as a 14-year-old.
Phillips immediately showcased his skills, becoming a starter as a freshman and contributing to the team’s first sectional title since 2000. Michel raised expectations further, appointing Phillips as team captain and moving him to shortstop. I told him straight up, ‘I’m going to come at you at times this year if I don’t think it’s good enough,’
shared Michel of his coaching approach.
Phillips appreciates this tough-love strategy, viewing it as preparation for college-level play. His performance validates Michel’s confidence as he leads the Trojans (13-16) with an impressive .385 batting average, .615 slugging percentage, and 1.058 OPS. These statistics include one home run, four triples, 11 doubles, 24 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases, demonstrating his impact on the Highlands team.
Adapting to New Challenges
Phillips, initially slated for third base, transitioned to shortstop after junior Danijel Zekavica’s ACL injury during basketball season. He has adapted well, enjoying increased involvement in the game. Despite being a captain alongside senior pitcher Cash Washick and sophomore second baseman Brady Boyd, Phillips feels comfortable in his role.
Junior right fielder Logan Finch commends Phillips for his versatility, noting his ability to play various positions and contribute as a pitcher. Phillips’s dedication to his team is evident as he continues to refine his skills.
Phillips reflected on his progress at the plate, citing significant improvements in his hitting. I’m really seeing the ball well,
he said. Coach Michel emphasizes the importance of continued growth, bearing in mind their previous 9-0 regional loss to Andrean, the eventual state champions.
The Trojans anticipate a competitive game against NorthWood. Michel acknowledges, we match up decently,
and he is optimistic about their prospects. Phillips shares this optimism, relishing the opportunity to chase further success.
The team’s recent accomplishments and strong leadership fuel their drive toward a regional title. With Phillips at the helm, Highland’s aspirations extend beyond sectional triumphs as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
