HHS Decertifies Kentucky Organ Donor Network Over Incident

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has decertified Kentucky’s organ donation network following a disturbing incident involving a living patient whose organs were almost harvested. This move comes in response to safety failures that have raised concerns about ethical practices and patient trust. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called for reforms to ensure the protection of patients and restore public confidence.

In a separate incident, a hospital in Nashville is under scrutiny after four individuals went for routine joint replacement surgeries and allegedly received the wrong drug during their procedures. The patients were injected with potassium phosphate instead of the intended anesthetic, leading to severe health complications.

According to reports, Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown in Nashville admitted to a “medication error” in their pharmacy. This error resulted in adverse health reactions among the affected patients. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now conducting an investigation into the incident after receiving information from the Tennessee Healthcare Facilities Commission.

Kristina Dorton, whose mother-in-law was among the patients, shared her distress over the situation. “The joint replacement went wonderful. Her knee is great. The rest of her is not,” Dorton said, explaining that her mother-in-law has been left paralyzed from the breastbone down.

Three other patients also suffered serious complications, with CBS News reporting that another patient is paralyzed. The hospital’s CEO, Dr. Shubhada Jagasia, expressed deep remorse over the situation, stating, “Our hearts are with the four patients and their families impacted by this event. We are deeply sorry for the harm caused.”

The hospital has met with affected families, offering support and ensuring access to necessary resources and ongoing care. Dr. Jagasia emphasized the hospital’s commitment to safe and high-quality care, saying that any gap in standards receives immediate attention. The hospital self-reported to state regulators and launched a thorough investigation, addressing the cause and implementing corrective safeguards.

Despite these efforts, Kristina Dorton revealed that recovery treatments for her mother-in-law are proving ineffective, highlighting the gravity of the situation. “This is life-changing. You don’t come out of this without some type of life-altering, catastrophic deficit,” Dorton stated, expressing hope for effective solutions.
