Heroic Lifeguard Rescue at Seabright State Beach

Last weekend, Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, was a scene of dramatic rescue. Warm July temperatures drew crowds to the area, while the eastern Pacific Ocean’s tropical cyclones produced large swells with waves reaching up to 10 feet.

Scott Vander Dussen, a witness, relayed the urgency of the situation. He spotted a ‘black dot,’ a 10-year-old boy, being swept into the ocean by powerful rip currents and waves. Running to the lifeguard tower, Vander Dussen alerted the lifeguards to the boy’s peril.

The State Parks officials stated that the boy had lost his balance, overcome by the strength of the waves. As lifeguards dashed into the water, Vander Dussen captured the event on camera. The footage shows a lifeguard holding the boy tightly as they are tossed by the waves.

“The entire beach was full of people. Everyone applauded when [the boy] came out. Just a couple seconds difference, and I think this would have ended a lot different,” Vander Dussen said.

Ultimately, two lifeguards managed to bring the weary boy back to the safety of the beach. Remarkably, one of the rescuers was a rookie lifeguard aged 16-17, described as displaying extraordinary poise under pressure. The boy was handed over to his parents, uninjured but exhausted.

The daring rescue caught national attention. President Trump and his son Eric acknowledged the lifeguard’s bravery on social media. President Trump announced plans to honor the young hero at the White House, emphasizing his courageous actions.

Throughout the weekend, Santa Cruz District lifeguards conducted 34 rescues, demonstrating the potential hazards of the ocean. Officials also conducted preventative interventions, aiding countless beachgoers and reducing the risk of incidents.

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement for San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay. It warned of sneaker waves and rip currents, advising beachgoers to remain cautious and stay out of the water.

Lifeguards emphasize the importance of vigilance. If you see someone struggling, seek help immediately from a lifeguard or call 9-1-1 instead of attempting a rescue yourself.
