Situated in the southern expanse of Mexico City, Estadio Azteca has hosted 19 matches across two World Cups, including two finals. Memorable moments include Brazil’s victory in 1970 and Diego Maradona’s controversial ‘Hand of God’ goal in 1986. Locals affectionately call it the ‘Colossus of Santa Ursula.’

Current Role in 2026

This year, it hosts the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, along with two more group games. Its final match will be in the round of 16. After that, Mexico and Canada will watch the remaining matches unfold in the United States.

Naming and Renovation

Officially termed Estadio Banorte due to a sponsorship deal, the stadium is widely recognized by its historic name, Estadio Azteca. For the World Cup, it’s referred to as Mexico City Stadium.

The recent renovations reduced the maximum capacity to 87,500, with FIFA citing a capacity of 72,766 for the World Cup events. This is notably less than the 115,000 to 130,000 fans it once accommodated.

The Azteca features a hybrid pitch of grass and artificial turf. Enhancements have been made to the irrigation system. Given the altitude of over 2,000 meters, the June temperatures average 74°F (25.8°C), manageable for teams and spectators.

Renovations and Access

Renovations have transformed the stadium with new corporate areas, updated sound systems, and improved screens. On match days, parking restrictions apply, making public transport the advisable choice. The light rail line connects to the Metro, and a park and ride system is in place from Six Flags theme park.
