Flights at Ronald Reagan National Airport were halted for several hours on Tuesday due to heightened security during the visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran war. This resulted in over 100 flight cancellations and widespread delays. Sources informed CBS News about these measures.

Commercial flights were postponed from taking off or landing from 11 a.m. ET to around 3 p.m. Flight tracking site FlightAware reported over 300 flights were delayed and at least 126 canceled. The affected airport is located within one of the nation’s most congested and tightly controlled airspaces, where commercial flights navigate alongside military traffic.

Efforts to Minimize Impact During Prime Minister’s Visit

White House and Federal Aviation Administration officials provided timing updates throughout the Iraqi Prime Minister’s visit to mitigate disruption. They allowed landing for airborne planes and departure for grounded ones at Reagan National (DCA), a senior administration official stated. However, spokespeople for the FAA and Department of Transportation declined to comment.

President Trump welcomed Prime Minister al-Zaidi, elected in May, to discuss U.S.-Iraqi relations. Their meeting extended into an unscheduled lunch, with Mr. Trump highlighting their positive rapport.

U.S.-Iraq Relations Amid Regional Tensions

Prime Minister al-Zaidi’s motorcade departed the White House for the Pentagon at 1:30 p.m., delayed with a security helicopter escorting through DCA airspace. His ascension came after President Trump threatened to withdraw U.S. support if a pro-Iran candidate won.

Al-Zaidi faces complex dynamics with Iran, which wields considerable influence in Iraq. The Iraqi government aims to disarm pro-Iran militias by September 30, coinciding with planned U.S. troop withdrawal.

The U.S.-Iran war, ongoing for four months, raises security concerns globally and domestically. Counterterrorism experts have pointed to Iran’s past actions within the U.S., including plots orchestrated through domestic surrogate networks.

Additional Security Concerns Amid Domestic Threats

The federal government warned of other threats, notably recent assassination attempts against President Trump. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth briefed certain Congress members at the Pentagon on the military budget Tuesday night. The proposed $1.5 trillion budget addresses these security challenges by funding weapons and capabilities.

Last month, the FBI thwarted plans to attack a UFC event at the White House involving snipers and drones laden with explosives, leading to the indictment of eight individuals. However, sources disclosed that actual drones hadn’t been recovered, and the drone plot remained under research and discussion.
