Governor Newsom Rules Out 2028 Presidential Run Against Harris

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared that he will not pursue the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 if Kamala Harris decides to run. In a recent interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Newsom expressed deference towards the former Vice President, stating, “I wouldn’t run if she ran. Why would I? I wouldn’t do that to her.” His remarks underscore a commitment to avoiding a potential conflict for California supporters.

Newsom’s decision lessens the chances of a face-off between two influential California political figures in an election viewed by Democrats as critical. The prospect of Harris seeking the presidency again after her 2024 defeat to President Trump has been a major topic within the party.

Both Newsom and Harris have shown interest in a 2028 presidential bid. However, Harris has remained non-committal about her plans. In a podcast interview with Megan Rapinoe, she mentioned her current focus is on supporting Democrats in the midterm elections.

Harris has emerged as a frontrunner in several polls concerning 2028, with notable leads over Newsom. Yet, there are uncertainties about whether voters, disillusioned by the 2024 loss, will rally behind her candidacy. Some California donors have expressed reservations about supporting Harris, while others showed more interest in Newsom.

The 2028 Democratic primary landscape is evolving, especially with South Carolina being chosen as the first primary state. This decision could benefit Harris if she garners support from South Carolina’s Black voters.

Both Harris and Newsom have advanced their political careers without competing directly against each other. In a February CNN interview, Newsom mentioned, “I’ve never gotten in the way of her ambition.” His latest comments reflect a belief that both running would only divide their supporters, which others could exploit in the race.

Newsom has been making moves typical of those considering a presidential run, such as visiting South Carolina. Yet, he expressed in his interview that a dual candidacy with Harris would not serve the greater good. “The Venn diagram on that is just pure crossover,” he stated.

The interview took place in Montana, where Newsom and Tapper indulged in fly-fishing. Newsom emphasized the importance of being self-aware and asked, “Do you represent the zeitgeist of the moment or are you wasting everybody’s time?”
