Georgia High School Student Injured in Shooting; Another Student in Custody

On Wednesday afternoon, a shooting at Warner Robins High School in Georgia resulted in one student being injured, according to officials. A 14-year-old student is currently in custody. The incident was reported by the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, noting it occurred on the school campus.

The sheriff’s office initially stated that two people were hurt; however, Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton later confirmed that only one student sustained injuries and received treatment at a local hospital. The shootout happened after an altercation in a school bathroom, which escalated when one student shot another.

The shooting took place at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time within one of the school’s bathrooms. Investigators revealed that two ninth-grade students had a disagreement, leading to one pulling a gun and firing at the other. After the incident, the student who fired the weapon fled but was subsequently captured in a nearby neighborhood.

Fortunately, what could have been a much worse incident was minimized to us only having one student injured.

Details about how the student obtained the firearm or any potential charges have not been disclosed. Warner Robins High School will remain closed for the rest of the week, affecting both students and staff. The school’s crisis team will be available on Friday and Monday to support the community.

Warner Robins, positioned in Central Georgia roughly 100 miles south of Atlanta, experienced a wave of reactions following the shooting incident.

Georgia lawmakers voiced their concern and support for the affected community. Warner Robins Mayor LaRhonda W. Patrick expressed her sadness over the incident occurring so close to home, acknowledging its impact on students, faculty, parents, and the larger community. In her social media post, she praised public safety officers for their swift actions.

Governor Brian Kemp also commented via X, recognizing the prompt response of those involved in controlling the situation. He commended their efforts to maintain safety within the school environment.

Senator Raphael Warnock mentioned that he and his office are monitoring the situation closely and extended his prayers to the injured student. He appreciated the work of law enforcement and first responders.
