Fumbling Concerns for Buffalo Bills’ James Cook Amid Strong Rushing Performance

2 hours ago 0

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is attracting attention for a growing problem that overshadows his otherwise stellar performance on the field. Currently, Cook ranks third in the NFL for rushing this season with 532 yards, having led the league with 1,621 yards last year.

Despite his impressive stats, Cook’s tendency to fumble is becoming a concern. In the first five games of the season, the 27-year-old has fumbled four times, the highest in the NFL. This issue was evident in the Bills’ recent 37-34 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams, where Cook fumbled twice. His last fumble almost cost his team the win.

Cook’s issues with ball security are not new. He fumbled six times during the previous season, bringing his total to 11 fumbles over the last 23 games, including playoffs. Head coach Joe Brady has expressed frustration over this tendency, hinting that it might affect Cook’s playing time.

“Right now, we’re putting the ball in harm’s way,” Brady said. “And the way that we lose football games is we turn the ball over. Our two best players turned the ball over last night, and James has put the ball on the ground. Look, he’s doing some good things running the football.”

Brady acknowledged Cook’s effectiveness on the ground but noted that his fumbles negate these positives. The coach stated his confidence in Cook, which is why he continues to play him, but added consequences must follow persistent mistakes.

“So, (those are) conversations we’re having that are ongoing, and James knows it’s important to him. That can’t happen, and it’s going to cost us football games. … We can’t confuse because we won the game that that’s OK.”

Should Brady decide to limit Cook’s involvement as a disciplinary measure, backup Ray Davis is likely to see increased action. Last season, Davis contributed 275 rushing yards and caught 10 passes for 86 yards with two touchdowns. In addition, Ty Johnson and Frank Gore Jr. may also receive more carries to compensate.
