President Donald Trump addressed fuel prices, stating they are “not very high, relatively speaking,” despite the ongoing conflict with Iran causing a spike in gas costs. Some Americans have expressed frustration with the administration’s handling of the situation.
Trump’s comments coincided with a new Reuters/Ipsos poll indicating that 60% of Americans disapprove of U.S. military actions against Iran. Many expect gas prices to continue rising. As of June 10, the average price per gallon for regular gasoline was $4.15, reflecting a decrease from earlier rates. AAA reported that this time last year, the price was $3.12.
The conflict has impacted oil supply due to blockades in the Strait of Hormuz. Since the conflict’s start, regular gasoline costs have increased by nearly 40%. Increases were noted in May, April, and March, compounding the strain on consumers.
“The numbers were great.” Trump responded to the Consumer Price Index report showing annual inflation rose to 4.2% in May. “I love the inflation. You know why?”
Trump highlighted U.S. actions to extract oil from Iran as efforts to reduce fuel prices. He urged Americans to remain patient, emphasizing that concerns over Iran’s potential nuclear capability were more critical than current financial difficulties.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll also showed that 59% of respondents expect gas prices to worsen over the next year, with varying views across political affiliations. Rising fuel costs have affected consumer sentiment, with the University of Michigan reporting a significant drop in confidence.
Despite recent hopes for de-escalation in the Middle East and reports of tankers navigating out of the region, price fluctuations continue. Trump remarked on the oil flow from the Hormuz Strait and suggested prices were comparatively lower than during the previous administration.
The price of crude oil, which reached $117.60 per barrel in April, stands at $90.30 as of June 10. Although it is still high, it is less than the $130.50 per barrel recorded in March 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which also restricted oil supplies.
