Frank Garofalo’s dedication pays off as his walk-off single leads St. Rita
Frank Garofalo, a junior infielder for St. Rita, showed remarkable resilience throughout the season. Despite spending much of the time on the bench, he remained prepared and confident. Early challenges didn’t deter him and a late-season injury to teammate Braden Quinn opened the door for Garofalo to prove himself.
Reflecting on his journey, Garofalo stated, “I always knew I could play with everyone but I never had an opportunity. When ‘BQ’ got hurt, I stepped in and played well.” This chance led him to deliver one of the team’s most memorable hits—a walk-off single in the Class 3A state semifinal against East Peoria, leading St. Rita to a 2-1 victory.
“I finally got my chance and I kept going.”
Sully Kazee played a pivotal role as well, securing the win with his pitching skills. Kazee, committed to Southeastern in Iowa, threw a solid game with only three hits allowed. His performance contributed significantly to the Mustangs’ path to the state finals.
The game showcased impressive plays from other team members too. Heartland College recruit Colin Quinn went 2-for-3, and Julio Gutierrez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Following the victory, Garofalo experienced a memorable celebration, getting dogpiled by ecstatic teammates.
Looking ahead, St. Rita aims to win its first state championship, facing Troy Triad at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Coach John Nee, with three previous attempts to secure a state title, emphasizes the importance of tradition in the community.
“It would mean everything for our community and all the past players and past coaches. Tradition never graduates.”
Garofalo’s role in the semifinal marked a significant moment, having come in with only four RBIs prior. After East Peoria’s R.J. Duncheon hit a game-tying home run, Garofalo responded decisively, driving in JJ Quinlan at a crucial moment.
The game strategy was simple yet effective. Jayden Ibarra initiated the bottom of the seventh with a double. After a fielder’s choice put him out at third, pinch-hitter Quinlan advanced to second, setting the stage for Garofalo’s game-winning hit.
Garofalo expressed his emotions, stating, “I got a fastball. I knew it was a big moment and I was ready for it.” His readiness culminated in delivering a walk-off moment he had never previously experienced.
Throughout the season, Garofalo took advantage of opportunities and contributed defensively. Coach Nee acknowledged his progress in the team’s endeavors.
“Every opportunity he got he took advantage of it, particularly defensively, and now this is the third game in a row he’s come up with a big hit.”
Sully Kazee echoed these sentiments, expressing relief at not needing to pitch extra innings. Seeing Garofalo’s decisive performance, he felt confident in the game outcome.
Garofalo’s love for baseball, cultivated since T-ball, shines through in high-pressure situations. His commitment and passion exemplify the spirit of the game.
