Democracy Dies in Darkness

In the late 1990s, while working as an assistant principal in Chicago, I would post a job opening for a physics teacher and receive around 20 applications. Meanwhile, a position for an English teacher might attract as many as 150 applicants.
However, as time passed and I eventually left the district, the scenario had changed drastically. Those same job postings now struggled to attract even one or two qualified candidates.
