Florida State has not yet terminated Mike Norvell, but discussions about potential successors are already in progress. College football analyst J.D. PicKell posted a video on X, naming the coaches he would consider if the Florida State Seminoles position became available.
PicKell’s initial opinion about Mike Norvell was brief and direct: “Mike Norvell is cooked.” Among the names he mentioned, Kenny Dillingham, the current head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils, was highlighted. PicKell expressed uncertainty regarding Dillingham’s interest but emphasized the importance of reaching out. He stated, “At the very least, contact Kenny Dillingham.” PicKell speculated that Dillingham might consider the opportunity, noting, “Is there a scenario where Kenny Dillingham decides, I have a strong attachment to ASU and Tempe, yet if Florida State offers better resources, it may be time to expand my opportunities.”
On the other hand, Jimbo Fisher was not included in PicKell’s list of potential candidates. However, Duke’s Manny Diaz, SMU’s Rhett Lashlee, and Memphis’ Charles Huff were mentioned as potential options.
The Seminoles are facing challenges after their recent 44-20 defeat by Louisville on October 9, marking their record at 3-3 and 1-2 in ACC play. This loss continued a troubling pattern, with Florida State suffering its 11th consecutive road defeat. Presently, Norvell has managed only four wins in his past 19 conference games.
The financial implications of firing Norvell are substantial. Pete Nakos from On3 calculated Norvell’s buyout to be around $51 million, including a duty-to-mitigate clause. The overall expenses for replacing him and assembling a new coaching staff could reach approximately $100 million.
According to Nakos, although an immediate mid-season change may seem improbable, it is still being considered. The topic of resources is central to the idea of recruiting Dillingham, given Florida State’s financial position compared to top ACC programs. This gap in resources was further emphasized by the recent dismissal of athletic director Michael Alford.
Florida State established a performance goal for Norvell, requiring a record of 7-5 or better for him to remain into 2027. Climbers toward this target, FSU must secure three victories from forthcoming games against Miami, Clemson, Boston College, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, and Florida, aiming to qualify for a bowl game.
