Ben Simmons’ New Opportunity with the Sacramento Kings

1 day ago 0

Ben Simmons is set for a new chapter in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings. This season, Simmons could take on a significant role as he joins the starting lineup after missing the entire 2025-26 season. Reports indicate that Simmons will be starting alongside rookie guard Darius Acuff when the Kings face the Los Angeles Clippers on October 21.

This news follows Simmons’ recent participation in a preseason game against the Golden State Warriors. In his return, the 30-year-old recorded seven points and one assist in nine minutes, despite the Kings losing 111-106. His inclusion in the starting lineup signals Sacramento’s intention to utilize him prominently.

Ben Simmons’ career has been both celebrated and challenging. Drafted first overall in 2016, he made a strong start with the Philadelphia 76ers, earning three All-Star selections. His reputation was built on versatility, evidenced by his passing, rebounding, and defense. However, injuries and inconsistency caused setbacks, and subsequent stints with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers were less fruitful.

Recurring health problems, particularly with his back and knees, sidelined him for the 2025-26 season. Now, the Sacramento Kings have signed him to a one-year, $3.5 million contract, hoping he can help improve their recent 22-60 record. Scott Perry, Sacramento’s general manager, made this decision after evaluating Simmons in a workout.

Simmons’ skills could mesh well with rookie guard Darius Acuff. At 6-foot-10, Simmons can handle the ball, lead the offense, and defend various positions. This allows Acuff to focus on his scoring and development. Acuff expressed enthusiasm about playing with Simmons, appreciating his veteran leadership and speed.

Kings head coach Doug Christie shared optimism, praising Simmons’ comprehensive skill set and defensive capabilities. This could provide Sacramento the lineup flexibility needed during the preseason.

The key challenge for Simmons remains his health and ability to consistently perform through an 82-game season. He has not completed more than 51 regular-season games since 2020-21. Despite past injuries, Simmons expressed confidence in his conditioning after his recent appearance.

Sacramento’s decision revolves around integrating Simmons’ experience to guide a team seeking a new identity. If Simmons can stay healthy and secure his place as a starter, his story might become a notable comeback in the NBA this season.
