The iconic Italian sports car manufacturer, Ferrari, has revealed its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce. This unveiling marks a significant shift in the company’s storied history. The presentation took place on a Monday, amidst growing concerns about the luxury electric vehicle market.
The Luce is Ferrari’s bold move into the realm of electric sports cars. With room for five, this model represents one of the largest risks Ferrari has ever taken, especially as the luxury car industry grapples with missed deadlines and costly commitments to transition to electric vehicles.
Despite the substantial weight from its battery components, Ferrari claims the Luce can handle high-speed cornering effectively. Yet, the crucial question remains: will affluent buyers invest over half a million dollars in an electric Ferrari that lacks the traditional aesthetic and the iconic sound of its engine?
This is a major investment by Ferrari in a product with uncertain market demand,” commented Angus MacKenzie, international bureau chief for MotorTrend. “They’re understandably anxious.
The story of Luce, meaning “light” in Italian, is unique compared to Ferrari’s previous 80 years in automotive production. For its design, Ferrari partnered with LoveFrom, an agency led by former Apple design executive Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson. The collaboration resulted in a glass and polished aluminum frame that can approach speeds of 200 miles per hour.
