Felix Rosenqvist emerged victorious in the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500, clinching the win in a thrilling finish. Rosenqvist overtook David Malukas in the final moments, preventing the American from securing his inaugural IndyCar victory. The race concluded with the narrowest margin in 500 history, as Rosenqvist edged out Malukas by 0.023 seconds.
Scott McLaughlin secured third place, while Pato O’Ward continued his consistent performance streak with yet another top-four finish. O’Ward has now finished second, third, and fourth in consecutive 500s. Toward the race’s end, Brazilian driver Caio Collet crashed with seven laps remaining. He overcorrected and collided with the wall, causing his car to burst into flames on the grass. Fortunately, Collet emerged unharmed.
Despite the red flag, race officials only permitted drivers to get cooled down, hydrate, and change batteries. No refueling or tire changes were allowed. Rosenqvist managed a strategic move after the stoppage to surpass O’Ward, who described his vehicle’s performance unfavorably compared to his rivals. O’Ward felt disadvantaged, calling himself a “sitting duck” after the race.
As the race resumed with less than 10 laps to go, drivers pushed their cars to the limits. Marcus Armstrong made a brilliant move to lead briefly, with Malukas moving into second. Rosenqvist and O’Ward slipped to third and fourth. A subsequent caution resulted in the race’s conclusion featuring a green and white flag lap, a single lap determining the outcome.
Malukas, in the lead, anticipated a victory, with Armstrong and Rosenqvist pursuing. McLaughlin surged into third, joining the battle. In a tense finish, Rosenqvist maneuvered to the right, accelerating past Malukas to claim the win. A jubilant Rosenqvist celebrated with his team, while Malukas expressed his disappointment, noting his car’s speed during the competition.
After the victory, Rosenqvist expressed disbelief over the finish, acknowledging the audience for enduring the poor weather. He shared his wish that his wife, Emille, and newborn daughter could have witnessed the monumental moment. This victory also marked a significant achievement for Meyer Shank Racing, their second 500 win. The team’s first triumph was with Hélio Castroneves, an owner of Rosenqvist’s vehicle, during Castroneves’ historic fourth win.
