Federal prosecutors have presented murder charges against Rahmanullah Lakanwal, accused of shooting National Guard members in Washington last year. Authorities may consider seeking the death penalty if he is convicted.
Lakanwal pleaded not guilty to charges brought by a federal grand jury on Tuesday. Previously, he faced first-degree murder charges under D.C. law, which abolished the death penalty in 1981.
A government attorney informed Judge Amit P. Mehta that the Justice Department is evaluating the possibility of pursuing the death penalty. This process includes reviewing evidence and consulting with the U.S. attorney’s office. The final decision timeline remains uncertain.
The lawyer referenced a similar case involving Elias Rodriguez, charged with killing two Israeli embassy staff last year. The U.S. Attorney in Washington, Jeanine Pirro, signaled a death penalty pursuit in that instance.
Lakanwal, an Afghan national who assisted U.S. forces during the war, entered the U.S. in 2021 through an asylum program established by the Biden administration. He faces charges for the murder of Sarah Beckstrom, a National Guard specialist stationed in Washington. She was part of the deployment initiated by President Trump to enhance capital security.
Additionally, Lakanwal is accused of shooting Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe and attempting to murder two other Guard members. These individuals eventually subdued him following the incident. Both Beckstrom and Wolfe were attached to the West Virginia National Guard during the enforcement surge.
Prosecutors noted that they are examining substantial video evidence from body and surveillance cameras related to the case. Judge Mehta has scheduled the next court session for September 16.
In court, Lakanwal appeared in a wheelchair, wearing an orange jumpsuit, and utilized a Pashto interpreter for the proceedings.
