Authorities Investigate Crash

On Tuesday, officials reported that critical braking systems failed to deploy during a deadly plane crash. The incident involved an Amazon cargo jet that overran the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday. It collided with two vehicles, resulting in the death of five people.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), while the aircraft’s wheel brakes were activated, the speed brakes and thrust reversers were not. Chihoon Shin, the lead investigator for the NTSB, stated, “No indication in the recorded data shows that speed brakes or thrust reversers were deployed.” Investigators expect to interview the pilots to gather more information.

Understanding the Situation

Shin emphasized the need to analyze all parameters to determine the aircraft’s performance during the landing. “We need to talk to the crew and understand how they manipulated the controls,” he explained. This approach aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

Details of the Crew and Crash

The NTSB has not yet released the identities of the pilots, but Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy provided some details. The captain is 55 years old with 7,145 flight hours as noted in his latest Class 1 medical certificate from March 31, 2026. The first officer is 37 with 2,655 flight hours as of April 13, 2026.

Officials confirmed the absence of hazardous materials on board. The cargo was primarily contact lenses, totaling 32,222 pounds. The fiery crash of Prime Air Flight 7598 resulted in five fatalities and injured five others.

Aftermath and Impact

Seven individuals were in a van crushed during the incident on airport property. The plane continued past the airport fence, striking another civilian vehicle before halting near a parking lot.

The investigation by the NTSB continues as they seek to understand the sequence and cause of events leading to this tragedy.
