Fatal Incident Involving Unidentified Substance in New Mexico

Three individuals lost their lives, and nearly 20 first responders were placed in quarantine due to exposure to an unidentified substance at a New Mexico home, according to authorities.

Incident Overview

The New Mexico State Police reported that officers arrived around 11 a.m. at a Mountainair residence to assist the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office. The incident was initially suspected to involve an overdose linked to an unknown substance.

Inside the residence, four individuals were found unresponsive. Subsequently, three were declared deceased, as stated in a police report.

Impact on First Responders

18 first responders came into contact with the substance and developed symptoms such as nausea and dizziness.

The remaining occupant and the exposed first responders were taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital for quarantine and assessment.

New Mexico State Police indicated that two first responders are in serious condition. Meanwhile, Mountainair Mayor Peter Nieto shared that three of Mountainair EMS’s EMTs were discharged from the hospital. However, EMS Chief Josh Lewis will stay overnight for observation.

Substance Investigation

Authorities noted that the unidentified substance is not believed to be airborne. Investigators suggest it may spread through contact.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue’s hazmat team is actively working to identify the involved substance.

Mayor Nieto, via Facebook, mentioned that narcotics might be a contributing factor. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with officials aiming to confirm details before drawing final conclusions.

Public Safety Measures

Officials established a secure perimeter and reassured the public that there is no current threat.

Mountainair Public Works confirmed that the incident was neither linked to carbon monoxide nor natural gas.
