The Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers both faced significant challenges on offense in their game on Sunday. Atlanta’s performance included a disappointing 2-for-12 on third downs. They lost a total of 121 yards due to penalties and sacks, turned the ball over twice, and suffered a pick-six by T.J. Watt, which heavily impacted the game at Acrisure Stadium.
Pittsburgh’s effort wasn’t much improved, with a 3-of-13 rate on third downs. They lost 67 yards from penalties and sacks, experienced two failed fourth-down attempts, and lost one fumble.
“The Falcons and Steelers game ranks 1,069 out of 1,097 games analyzed by Sumer Sports in Total EPA. It falls in the third percentile,” said Shawn Syed of Sumer Sports.
The Falcons’ issues are compounded by having Cooper Rush at quarterback due to injuries to Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. Despite having talented players like Bijan Robinson at running back, Drake London at wide receiver, and Kyle Pitts at tight end, they struggled to perform even at an average level.
On the other side, the Steelers’ poor showing was unexpected, considering DK Metcalf’s performance of catching just four passes from over ten targets, Rico Dowdle’s average of less than two yards per carry, and Aaron Rodgers completing 24 of 40 passes.
Looking ahead, both teams face daunting tasks. The Steelers will travel to play the defending conference champions, the New England Patriots. Meanwhile, the Falcons will go against the Carolina Panthers, who allowed 59 points at home against the Chicago Bears.
