Explosive-Laden Drone Discovered at German Airport

A forensic technician partnered with a bomb-disposal robot near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport after a drone carrying an explosive device was found on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. The detonator was successfully removed from the object at the airport located in Schkeuditz, Germany.

German authorities managed and defused the threat, stating it brought a concerning evolution in danger levels. Both runways of this significant freight hub were closed, causing several flights, including a passenger plane, to be rerouted following the sighting of the drone close to midnight on Tuesday. An explosive-handling robot was employed to examine a suspicious object near the south runway. According to regional police and prosecutors, an airport worker discovered the drone containing ‘an unknown explosive device’ beside the airport’s south runway. The police subsequently removed its detonator.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt highlighted this event as ‘a new quality of danger.’ He elaborated that while drone threats aren’t uncommon, a drone armed with explosives at an airport sets a new standard for threat scenarios. Dobrindt labeled the incident a ‘hybrid attack scenario,’ though he refrained from providing additional insights concerning the perpetrators or the drone’s origins, emphasizing that such details fall under the ongoing investigation.

Armin Schuster, Saxony state’s regional interior minister, indicated that authorities were on the lookout for remnants of another potential drone. Officials revealed an apparent second flying item encountered a cargo plane which had to cancel its landing at Leipzig/Halle due to the runway closure. This plane eventually landed at Hannover Airport about 125 miles northwest, where minor damage was found.

Leipzig/Halle’s north runway was reinstated after two hours, while the south runway was already set aside for maintenance work on Wednesday. Officials declared there was no harm posed to passengers or staff, keeping flights operating throughout the day. Images from the site depicted police preparing an explosives-disposal robot close to a Ukrainian aircraft. As a substantial cargo center, the airport hosts Ukrainian Antonov transport planes. NATO acknowledged awareness of this situation, directing inquiries to German officials.

Previously in 2024, an incendiary incident at the airport triggered speculation of Russian intelligence involvement, as a logistical center blaze engulfed a freight container. Delays affected the flight scheduled during the incident. Western authorities have accused Russia and its affiliates of orchestrating various attacks across Europe since Ukraine’s full-scale invasion over four years ago.
