Excavation Set to Begin for Trump Memorial Arch in Washington, D.C.

Excavation will commence in the coming weeks for a site intended for a memorial arch in Washington, D.C. This arch, planned by the Trump administration, faces a legal challenge from opponents concerned about its impact on historical sight lines.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced on Thursday that the project, named the Great Triumphal Arch and Military Observation Deck, will be situated on Columbia Island. This location is between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

“This will be one of the Great Pieces of American Architecture, honoring the history and significance of Arlington Cemetery and befitting the most powerful Capital in the World,” Burgum wrote on X, accompanying conceptual images of the arch, which is expected to reach a height of 250 feet.

The design features a white arch with gold detailing, with the words “ONE NATION UNDER GOD” written on top. There is a gold Lady Liberty-like figure with wings and a torch above, alongside gold eagles with widespread wings.

Opposition comes from three veterans and an architectural historian, represented by attorney Nicolas Sansone. They argue the project lacks necessary congressional authorization. Sansone stated that construction should not proceed until the court intervenes.

A recent National Park Service report supports the arch proposal but acknowledges potential adverse effects on historical sight lines.

The project has been defended by Burgum, who asserts that the concept of a monumental arch has historical roots, referencing past congressional discussions and reports. He noted that many cities like Athens, London, and Paris feature arches, while Washington, D.C., does not.

“Interestingly, Washington, DC, is the only major Western capital without an arch,” Burgum noted. “Now after 125 years of waiting, the most powerful capital in the world will be home to the most spectacular and beautiful arch of them all!”

This memorial arch is among several initiatives by the Trump administration, such as renaming the Kennedy Center, building a new White House ballroom, and refurbishing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
