The release of the preseason Coaches Poll signals the impending start of the college football season. Debates have erupted about which conference, SEC or Big Ten, holds superiority. Indiana Hoosiers’ triumph in the National Championship with an undefeated 16-0 season has fueled these discussions. This occurred after Texas coach Steve Sarkisian claimed that undefeated teams were obsolete in the NIL era.

The 2026 season presents new challenges. Analyzing team strength is increasingly difficult due to the transfer portal and name, image, and likeness (NIL) changes. Coach turnover at major programs adds to the complexity.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL RETURNS AMID CONTROVERSY

The Florida Gators introduce Jon Sumrall as head coach. Lane Kiffin transitions to LSU Tigers, and Pete Golding moves to Ole Miss. Auburn secures Alex Golesh from USF. Penn State hires Matt Campbell, replacing James Franklin. Kyle Whittingham departs Utah for the Michigan Wolverines, filled with conflict after Sherrone Moore’s exit. Morgan Scalley assumes leadership in Salt Lake, while Bob Chesney aims to rejuvenate UCLA.

How did the voting staff of the Coaches Poll assess these transitions for the 2026 season? Surprisingly, they performed reasonably well.

To evaluate their accuracy, compare their rankings with analytics-driven systems. These systems, based on efficiency in offense, defense, and special teams against opponents, provide a strong gauge of a team’s core quality. Human voters decide the weight of wins and losses versus performance quality, a process often fumbled.

EVALUATING TEAM PERFORMANCE

Efficiency metrics like SP+, designed by Bill Connelly for ESPN, offer a comparison point for preseason rankings. SP+ analyzes past performances, returning production, and recruitment.

Remarkably, the top teams in SP+ and the Coaches Poll align closely. Ohio State and Oregon take the top spots in both metrics, with Georgia following. Texas and Notre Dame feature prominently, though in varied spots. These similarities suggest the poll reflects anticipated strong teams for 2026.

However, mid-poll differences reveal standard biases. Oklahoma and Ole Miss rank ninth and tenth but are lower in SP+. They participate in the SEC, leading to potential over-ranking in preseason polls, as seen with Florida and LSU in 2025, who underperformed their rankings.

Conversely, some SEC teams appear underrated, including LSU at 13th in the poll but 10th in SP+. Their substantial transfer class and quarterback strength under Kiffin’s guidance promote high expectations. Tennessee also seems undervalued, ranking 18th but 15th in SP+. Their previous displays were commendable.

Texas Tech stands out for its effective use of NIL and the portal to swiftly rebuild its program. Despite being shut out by Oregon in the playoffs, they boast top-10 offense and top-11 defense. As a result, they rank seventh in SP+ but are 12th in the poll.

UNDERVALUATIONS AND MISSES

Houston presents the most significant discrepancy, ranking 24th in the poll but 36th in SP+. The Week 3 Houston-Texas Tech matchup will showcase two ranked teams with differing perceptions.

Despite some misplacements, the Coaches Poll generally aligns closely with advanced ranking methods. Fans should note that preseason rankings don’t determine season outcomes. Consider Indiana’s rise from 19th to National Champions last season. In college football, surprises abound.
