European Heat Wave Exposes the Danube’s Historic Lows, Affecting Nuclear Operations and Spurs Wildfires

The month of August 2026 has brought remarkable changes in Europe’s landscape due to an extreme heat wave. A man was seen walking on a sandbank beside the wreckage of a World War II German warship. This wreckage surfaced during the drought at Djerdap II, a major dam on the Danube River bordering Romania and Serbia near Prahovo on August 4.

Impact on Nuclear Power Operations

Europe’s current heat wave has a significant impact on nuclear power operations as well. Hungary nearly experienced a complete shutdown of its sole nuclear power facility at Paks. According to Prime Minister Péter Magyar, the water level of the Danube River, vital for the plant’s cooling systems, had fallen dangerously close to stopping operations. Overnight, the water levels increased slightly, allowing the last turbine to operate safely.

Romania undertook measures to sustain its nuclear facility by conducting a controlled explosion to redirect cooling water. This action followed the closure of two reactors due to low water levels. Meanwhile, despite dwindling water levels, Bulgaria’s nuclear plant continues functioning without reducing capacity. However, the Danube’s situation has forced nearly 200 tourists to evacuate a grounded cruise ship near Bulgaria’s Vidin city.

The Danube’s shrinking state unveils relics from the past. In Serbia, drought conditions brought several Nazi-era German warships, sunk during the 1944 retreat, back into sight. This starkly illustrates the extent of the river’s reduction.

Wildfires Sweep Across Europe

The prolonged hot weather has led to fire-friendly conditions in Europe, particularly worsening the situation in Greece. In Western Attica near Athens, fires, agitated by changing wind conditions, have stretched resources. Over 500 firefighters, including several helicopters, are combating the flames, as noted by Greek media and officials.

Unfortunately, firefighting efforts came with tragic outcomes, including helicopter collisions resulting in casualties. France, which had significant wildfires recently, reports most fires under control. Yet, some areas still harbor unexpected threats, such as potentially unexploded World War II munitions discovered over the weekend.

Health Warnings Amidst Record Temperatures

The soaring temperatures have prompted health alerts across Europe. Italy’s Health Ministry has declared red alerts for 25 major cities, anticipating all cities reaching red alerts soon. In the UK, heat health alerts target eight regions of England, emphasizing health risks for vulnerable groups due to rising temperatures.

Record temperatures persist across the continent. Notably, the Czech Republic’s town of Bystřice pod Hostýnem recorded its highest-ever overnight temperature, exceeding 82 degrees Fahrenheit.
