A tragic incident involving an illegal immigrant from Mexico resulted in the death of a young girl in North Carolina. The accident occurred when Jaime Santiago Corona, who has been deported three times, was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck on July 3. Failing to halt at a stop sign, he collided with an SUV driven by Kelli Toler, a 35-year-old mother traveling with her two children in Pitt County, as reported by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Toler and her 4-year-old child sustained serious injuries and were rushed to ECU Health Greenville for treatment. Sadly, Toler’s 6-year-old daughter, Calli, lost her life at the scene. The family was reportedly on their way to have lunch and to visit a swimming pool prior to the accident.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expressed that this tragedy was preventable. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis extended condolences, saying, “Our prayers are with Calli Toler and her family.”
Corona is faced with numerous charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to stop at a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving while his license was revoked. His history of illegally re-entering the U.S. multiple times constitutes a felony. DHS also noted his prior record of driving under the influence and other offenses such as homicide-negligent manslaughter, obstruction of police, and multiple traffic violations.
A detainer hold has been issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed its cooperation with ICE in this matter.
