Europe Battles Severe Wildfires Amidst Heatwave

Spain has declared a national emergency due to severe wildfires forcing the evacuation of approximately 10,000 individuals in the central region around Madrid. In southern France, tens of thousands more have fled their homes to escape massive fires.

The national emergency grants Spain’s interior ministry command over the firefighting operations led by different regional governments. The central region of Madrid saw extensive evacuations as multiple uncontrolled fires broke out.

Spain has witnessed a significant increase in burnt areas, with 500 square miles affected this year, a sharp rise compared to previous years. This includes a major blaze in Guadalajara, north of Madrid, covering 120 square miles. Additionally, southern Spain recently experienced its deadliest fire, which claimed 13 lives.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged political cooperation to tackle climate change, emphasizing the need for adaptation strategies to cope with increasing fire risks. Temperatures in Spain have soared, reaching 39 degrees Celsius in several southeastern regions.

In southwestern France, authorities have ordered mass evacuations along the Atlantic coast. Approximately 40,000 people evacuated over two days due to a fire near Cap Ferret. Emergency services have called for European assistance under the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that firefighting aid is on the way, including aircraft and helicopters from various European countries. These efforts aim to control a blaze that has already consumed over 34 square miles.

Europe experiences increasingly frequent fires, becoming the fastest-warming continent since the 1980s. The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service highlights the severe impact of climate change, with record-breaking temperatures and increased fire susceptibility.
