Elena Rybakina’s Triumph at the U.S. Open

Elena Rybakina made a significant impact in New York by achieving a remarkable victory at the U.S. Open. Her journey in the tournament not only earned her the prestigious trophy but also the No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis, taking both honors from Aryna Sabalenka.

Rybakina faced challenges at the U.S. Open before, but this year marked a turning point. She won her first U.S. Open title by defeating Sabalenka with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. This victory also ensured her top placement in the rankings from the following week.

Reflecting on her achievement, Rybakina expressed her surprise. “It’s tough to find words right now, honestly,” she said. Despite dealing with an injury, circumstances seemed to favor her.

Rybakina’s victory marked her third Grand Slam title, the second this year following her win at the Australian Open against Sabalenka. This tournament ended Sabalenka’s impressive 19-match winning streak at the U.S. Open.

Financially, Rybakina’s triumph was rewarding, earning her $5.5 million, the largest prize in Grand Slam history. Sabalenka, though earning $2.8 million, clearly felt the sting of defeat, evidenced by her angry actions on the court.

Sabalenka had aimed for her third consecutive U.S. Open title, a feat last achieved by Serena Williams from 2012 to 2014. Commenting on her performance, Sabalenka admitted, “I was just out there competing, trying to do my best.” Rybakina’s strong return game, despite occasional serving difficulties, played a crucial role in her victory.

This match was historic as one of the few encounters between No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the U.S. Open women’s final. Rybakina’s achievement snapped Sabalenka’s 99-week reign at the top, achieved by securing enough points at the semifinals.

Though born in Russia, Rybakina represents Kazakhstan. Her major wins include Wimbledon in 2022, with the French Open as the next target in completing a career Grand Slam.

Sabalenka praised Rybakina, saying, “A lot of things make her dangerous,” particularly her powerful serve. Sabalenka, from Belarus, is known for her aggressive play style.

Rybakina’s presence on the court is marked by her composed demeanor, contrasting with Sabalenka’s vocal intensity. Despite moments of frustration during the final, Rybakina maintained control.

Sabalenka leads their rivalry 10-8. Her previous season successes came before a downturn, with early exits at Wimbledon, Toronto, and Cincinnati. Rybakina, recovering from an injury in Cincinnati, entered the U.S. Open eager to improve on past performances.

Rybakina remarked on her past experiences at the U.S. Open. “For the last 10 years, it was never successful,” she said. Her affection for New York grew with her success.

Sabalenka’s history at Arthur Ashe Stadium includes several finals and semi-finals, yet her struggles in the event surfaced on Saturday. Observing her coaching team, she showed visible frustration during the match.

Sabalenka managed to put pressure on Rybakina in the second set, creating opportunities to gain an edge. Although Rybakina initially countered Sabalenka’s efforts, Sabalenka eventually capitalized on a critical moment, tying the set before Rybakina took control once again.
