Egypt Coach Waves Palestinian Flag After World Cup Victory

In Cairo, Egypt, coach Hossam Hassan expressed his support for both Egyptians and Palestinians after a significant soccer victory. Following Egypt’s win over Australia in the World Cup, Hassan waved a Palestinian flag on the pitch, dedicating the triumph to people in both regions.

Egypt secured a place in the elimination round by defeating Australia 4-2 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the round of 32. This marks a milestone in Egypt’s fourth appearance in the World Cup. Hassan’s gesture was captured in a video that quickly gained popularity online, with spectators chanting “Free, free Palestine!”

Yahia Qalash, the former head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union, described Hassan’s move as a significant and exceptional moment. Amid ongoing conflict, the situation of over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza remains precarious. The war began when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to Israel’s retaliation, which, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, resulted in over 73,066 Palestinian deaths.

The global response includes various pro-Palestinian protests. Sports figures have shown solidarity, such as Lamine Yamal, who waved a Palestinian flag during a Spanish league celebration, sparking criticism from Israel’s defense minister.

Hassan, previously seen as a football icon in the 1980s and 1990s, clarified that his dedication is to the Egyptian and Palestinian people. Regarding the flag, FIFA confirmed that displaying the Palestinian flag is allowed at World Cup events. FIFA’s regulations permit flags from all 211 member associations to be shown, provided they comply with stadium rules and conduct codes.

Historically, FIFA has managed political expressions in sports. In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, they restricted European teams’ plans to wear armbands supporting the “One Love” anti-discrimination campaign. Additionally, Iranian Americans in Los Angeles sought but failed to lift a ban on displaying Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag during matches.
