Diverse Dinosaur Films Compete for Box Office Share

This weekend, two distinct dinosaur-themed films generated notable earnings in the North American box office, though neither could dislodge “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” from the top spot nor claim second place from “The Odyssey.”

“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” and “The End of Oak Street” both vied for third position during their debut weekends. Studio estimates on Sunday indicated “The End of Oak Street,” featuring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, slightly led with approximately $21 million, just ahead of “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” at $20.5 million.

The dominance of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” persisted as it continued attracting audiences for a third consecutive weekend. The Sony Pictures production garnered an additional $70 million from U.S. and Canada cinemas. Its domestic total reached an astounding $785.8 million, ranking as the fourth-largest U.S. release ever. Globally, combining $118.7 million from international markets, it surpassed $2 billion, thus becoming only the eighth film to achieve this milestone without accounting for inflation. It accomplished this feat in 18 days, second only to “Avengers: Endgame,” which reached the same figure in 11 days in 2019.

“The Odyssey” held on to second place, earning $23.2 million over the weekend, increasing its domestic total to $504.7 million. With international earnings of $98 million, largely driven by $36.6 million from early days in China, Christopher Nolan’s epic exceeded $1.2 billion globally.

“The End of Oak Street,” performing above expectations, amassed around $21 million from 3,446 locations, plus an additional $26 million from international screens. This contributed to a global debut of $47 million, measured against a reported $80 million production budget. The film, directed by David Robert Mitchell and written by the same, stars McGregor and Hathaway as suburban parents in 1982 who find their neighborhood mysteriously sent back to prehistoric times. Critics responded favorably, with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, yet audiences rated it with a B CinemaScore. PostTrak surveys showed that over half the audience would recommend it to friends.

Family audiences supported “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” released by Paramount Pictures in 3,545 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. With a PG rating, this is the third theatrical release for the Paw Patrol franchise since 2021. It amassed $69 million globally and received an A CinemaScore from opening weekend viewers.

The documentary “Katseye: Wild Hearts” completed the top five with $4 million from 724 theaters. Several other debut films also reached the top ten: “Six: The Musical Live” came in sixth with $3 million; “The Brink of War” followed with $2.7 million, and “Vishwanath & Sons,” a Tamil-language romance, claimed the tenth spot with $1.6 million.

Outside the top ten, the Matthew McConaughey crime thriller “The Rivals of Amziah King” grossed slightly over $1 million from 632 locations. Meanwhile, the Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony,” in its second weekend, collected $706,676 from 37 screens. A24 plans to expand this release in upcoming weeks.

This summer, the box office remains robust, contributing over $4.2 billion in ticket sales, marking a 5.7% increase from the pre-pandemic summer of 2019. Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak notes this figure is about $130 million short of the record 2013 summer led by “Iron Man 3” and “Despicable Me 2.”

Although surpassing 2013 seems unlikely, Dergarabedian suggests, “This is going to be a top five summer of all time.” The year’s cumulative ticket sales are nearing $6.9 billion.
