Disruptions Expected for Travelers Due to Cuba’s Blackout Crisis

Americans planning to travel to Cuba should brace for significant disruptions stemming from a critical blackout crisis affecting the country. The U.S. Embassy in Havana has stated that Cuba is currently facing a total power failure due to the collapse of its electrical grid.

The embassy advises all U.S. citizens in Cuba or considering travel to plan accordingly given the circumstances. Officials confirmed this is the sixth instance of a nationwide grid collapse in 2026, with three outages recorded in July alone.

Residents throughout Cuba are enduring intense heat and limited access to air conditioning. Many people are resorting to sleeping outdoors near water bodies to mitigate the effects of the oppressive temperatures. Reports indicate Sunday’s peak temperature reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit, but felt like 106 degrees due to the Caribbean’s 80% humidity levels.

Although Cuba does not primarily cater to tourists, it still draws visitors from various parts of the world, including American travelers. Nonetheless, U.S. laws prohibit Americans from visiting Cuba for tourism purposes. Exceptions are made for certain categories such as family visits, journalism, education, religious activities, and humanitarian projects, among others. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) outlines these permissible categories.

In response to ongoing challenges, the previous travel advisory, issued in May 2025, urged American visitors to stay vigilant about their surroundings and avoid physical resistance during any robbery attempt. It further recommended against displaying signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.

The advisory also highlighted the prevalence of prolonged power outages, suggesting that travelers bring portable battery banks, extra batteries, as well as nonperishable food and water. These disruptions arise from Cuba’s battle with an aging electrical infrastructure, compounded by recurrent fuel shortages that lead to frequent nationwide outages.

Despite claims by Cuban officials that U.S. sanctions are intensifying the energy crisis, the specific cause of this latest blackout and the anticipated timeline for power restoration remain unknown. According to Cuban regime media, details regarding the collapse have not been clarified, and it is uncertain when the power might be restored.
