A political newcomer, N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, has emerged victorious in the Democratic Senate runoff in Oklahoma. If elected, she plans to focus on impeaching President Donald Trump. Thomas, a nurse with no political background, defeated Jim Priest, a lawyer and nonprofit executive.
In the June primary, where five candidates vied for the nomination, Thomas garnered the highest percentage of votes. Her candidacy sets up a challenging contest in Oklahoma, a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate in over thirty years.
“Like I said, I’m kind, not nice. So I will make sure that I work as diligently as I can to make sure that within my first 100 days that we impeach, remove and convict,” Thomas stated in an NPR interview.
Thomas lists several policy proposals on her campaign site. These include increasing teacher pay, restoring Roe v. Wade, and expanding Obamacare. However, she prioritizes impeachment in her potential Senate career.
Facing her in November’s election is Republican Rep. Kevin Hern, a strong supporter of Trump. Oklahoma favored Trump by nearly 35 points in 2024, making the election a tough battle for Thomas.
Hern has built a significant campaign fund, peaking at nearly $10 million this cycle. In contrast, Thomas has raised around $60,000. Hern’s endorsement from Trump and his advocacy for the America First Agenda strengthen his position.
“Socialist Democrats like N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas are wildly out of touch with the values of Oklahomans and the direction they want our country moving toward,” Hern commented to Fox News Digital.
The upcoming election will test Thomas’s underdog momentum against Hern’s well-resourced campaign.
