In his statement, Hegseth emphasized the Department of War’s endorsement of Trump’s move to exclude these media organizations. He accused them of publishing fake news and creating threats to national security through misinformation. Trump announced the ban, stating that it resulted from the persistent dissemination of ‘fake news’ over two years. The president hinted at possible future bans on other news outlets.

Hegseth has furthered his own media restrictions since leading the Pentagon. His policies have limited reporters’ access within the department, requiring escorts for journalists and restricting Pentagon credentials to those who agree to publish only approved unclassified information. Hegseth argues these measures are crucial for safeguarding national security and preventing leaks.

CNN and Politico criticized the ban, defending their First Amendment rights. Some contributors from Fox News warned that the decision sets a negative precedent and might backfire.

The move comes amid Hegseth’s broader media control efforts, including limiting journalists’ free movement and imposing stricter publication rules.

A Pentagon briefing left lawmakers disappointed, seeking more clarity on national defense strategies. Other recent Pentagon actions include releasing UFO investigation details and updating testosterone deficiency screening protocols for service members.
