Danny DeVito Reflects on Wild ‘Taxi’ Parties and Career Success

Danny DeVito recently revealed a more festive side of the popular TV show “Taxi.” After filming, he and his co-stars often hosted lively parties. These gatherings lasted through the night, filled with loud music and a mix of guests from the entertainment industry.

Speaking on the “All the Smoke” podcast, DeVito mentioned that the parties included a variety of items like crudités. “It was the ’80s,” he remarked, capturing how wild the era was.

“Those were like ragers,” he explained. “Basically, it was like really crazy.”

The list of attendees extended beyond the “Taxi” cast. Stars like Robin Williams and Michael Jackson made appearances. DeVito shared that Belushi and “SNL” members also joined in.

The celebrations started as soon as filming wrapped for the night. DeVito noted, “So then we would transition right from the show that we finished, like, 10:30, 11. And immediately go up and blare the music… until the sun came up.” Despite these long nights, they only needed to be at work by noon on Monday.

DeVito’s role as Louie De Palma on “Taxi” was a turning point in his career. The sitcom aired from 1978 to 1983, featuring actors like Judd Hirsch and Marilu Henner. His portrayal of the brash dispatcher won him an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

He described the beginning of his career as an invaluable learning experience. “You were working with writers who were nose to the grindstone, never give up,” he shared. Their dedication was a major influence on him.

After “Taxi,” DeVito built a successful career as an actor, director, and producer. Notable works include films like “Twins,” “Batman Returns,” and “Matilda.” Since 2006, he has gained new fans with his role in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
