Tensions Erupt Over Rep. Ro Khanna’s West Bank Visit

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee accused Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., of misrepresenting his visit to Israel’s Biblical regions. Khanna visited the West Bank last week, claiming Israeli settlers detained him. Critics suggest the trip was a stunt aimed at advancing Khanna’s potential presidential ambitions.

Huckabee refuted Khanna’s account, writing on X, “The embassy was not informed of his visit. We’d have advised against entering restricted areas.” He emphasized that the facts are not aligning with the narrative presented by Khanna.

The California lawmaker reported his group was detained by settlers for over an hour, asserting he had notified the U.S. and Israeli embassies. He credited Deputy Chief of Mission David Brownstein for resolving the situation.

Khanna criticized the settlers and IDF officers involved, calling for prosecution and investigation. Footage posted by Eitan Fischberger, an Israeli analyst, challenged Khanna’s claims, portraying a less tense interaction.

Khanna expressed intentions to gain the Palestinian perspective and described his trip as a Palestinian-led visit to the West Bank, contrasting it with previous trips to Israel.

Dan Diker from the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs dismissed Khanna’s visit as politically motivated, aligning it with his pro-Palestinian stance.

Criticism arose from Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., who condemned Khanna for overlooking Israeli concerns during his visit, particularly ignoring survivors of recent attacks.

Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S., criticized Khanna for not coordinating his visit and for propagating anti-Israel sentiments. Khanna welcomed an invitation to discuss his grievances further with Israeli officials.

Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) clarified their involvement, stating they intervened after the area was reported as restricted. No violence was reported during the incident, and the IDF stressed the importance of pre-visit coordination.

An Israeli security official confirmed Khanna’s delegation lacked prior coordination, a necessary step for visits to sensitive areas. This lapse led to misunderstandings, temporarily blocking the visit.
