The Chicago Cubs experienced a challenging period, as their recent success was quickly overshadowed by a series of defeats. After riding on a high from their second 10-game winning streak of the season, the Cubs now find themselves no longer leading the National League Central standings. A 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday marked this shift, with the Cubs losing their top position for the first time since April 30.
The Cubs have endured four consecutive losses, winning only two of their last ten games. They plan to stop this downward trend with a win on Wednesday at Wrigley Field. Outfielder Ian Happ remarked on the situation, saying, “Every year has periods like that.” He reflected that despite the current losses, the team still holds a strong season record, sitting nine games over .500.
In a game marked by missed opportunities, the Cubs’ offense struggled to perform effectively. Jacob Misiorowski, the Brewers’ hard-throwing right-hander, impressed by allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings. The Cubs had a chance early in the game when Nico Hoerner walked and Michael Busch reached on an error, but Misiorowski stayed strong, retiring key batters to escape the threat. They failed to put another runner in scoring position until the eighth inning.
Manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the difficulty of facing Misiorowski: “I thought we took some good swings and just missed some balls.” Misiorowski forced the Cubs into a tough situation, commanding the game with his reliable strikeout skills and aggressive approach.
Despite the loss, there was a positive takeaway from Cubs starter Ben Brown’s performance. His ability to manage challenging innings demonstrated critical progress. While past outings might have been derailed by a single tough inning, Brown showed resilience, especially during the fourth inning when errors put him in a tight spot. He managed to strike out two Brewers and induced a groundout from William Contreras to control the damage, maintaining a 3-0 game at that point.
Reflecting on Brown’s outing, Counsell expressed satisfaction, noting that “Ben made some pretty good pitches, even on some hits, but he got in some trouble.” Brown’s ability to record crucial strikeouts in tense situations helped keep the game within reach. Ultimately, he allowed three runs over five innings, maintaining a season ERA of 2.09, and providing the Cubs a fighting chance.
Brown commented, “I feel like I limited the damage well.” He recognized areas for improvement but felt positive about his contribution overall.
Misiorowski’s dominance was attributed to his powerful pitching. His fastball averaged nearly 100 mph, achieving numerous called strikes and whiffs, which made it difficult for the Cubs to generate scoring opportunities. Misiorowski limited their chances effectively, proving to be a daunting opponent.
The Cubs activated a potential rally in the eighth, with Hoerner’s single and walks creating opportunities to score. However, subsequent strikeouts and a key out against pinch hitter Michael Conforto ended the threat.
Reflecting on the series, Counsell commented, “We’ve got 115 games to go, and they beat us the first two games.” The Cubs are determined to change their fortunes and avoid a sweep by the Brewers in their next matchup.
