The NBA Finals returned to Madison Square Garden, where the home team remained winless, as the San Antonio Spurs secured a crucial victory over the New York Knicks 115-111 in Game 3. Although New York still leads the series 2-1, the Spurs managed to close the gap by showcasing strong defense, capitalizing on timely shots, and limiting the Knicks to 2-of-12 from three-point range in the fourth quarter. This defeat also ended the Knicks’ 13-game playoff winning streak.
Victor Wembanyama, who fell short in Game 2, led the Spurs with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Yet, key contributions came from teammates De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, who delivered crucial baskets to secure the win.
The Spurs entered the game determined to set the pace. They built an 11-point lead by the end of the first quarter, fueled by Wembanyama’s nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and Castle’s perfect 3-of-3 shooting for seven points.
Despite the Spurs’ strong start, the Knicks proved resilient, drawing on the energy of the home crowd. By halftime, New York went ahead, leading 64-57, thanks to OG Anunoby’s 17 points and Jalen Brunson’s 15 points, while Josh Hart contributed 13 points with successful three-point attempts.
The second half saw the Spurs erasing the Knicks’ lead by forcing turnovers and executing well-timed counterattacks. As they traded scores with the Knicks, San Antonio managed a narrow one-point advantage as they entered the tense fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, foul trouble for the Knicks allowed the Spurs to extend their lead. Wembanyama’s free throws and key defensive plays, including blocking Landry Shamet’s layup attempt, helped maintain their hold on the game.
A crucial basket from Castle, a three-point shot with 1:53 remaining, expanded San Antonio’s lead at a pivotal moment. With Brunson reducing the Knicks’ deficit, Fox’s step-back jumper with 12.2 seconds left was instrumental in securing the win.
Anunoby’s three-pointer kept the Knicks in contention, but Castle’s two final free throws sealed the game. Castle ended with 23 points, complemented by every Spurs starter reaching double figures, while Dylan Harper contributed 13 points from the bench.
President Donald Trump attended the game, sitting with Knicks owner James Dolan, which led to increased security at the venue. Game 4 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden at 8:30 p.m. ET.
