On Tuesday, a burning cross in Grant Park, Chicago, shocked many and left them questioning how such an event could occur in a public space. Chicago police dedicated around three hours to investigate the incident, though they released limited details about it. The flames were clearly visible from Columbus Drive, leaving motorists and pedestrians equally stunned.
Resident Keinika Carlton, along with her daughter Alyna, expressed disbelief at witnessing the aftermath. “I’m surprised more people weren’t watching as someone set this on fire,” Keinika remarked, reflecting on the absurdity of the situation. Both were driving close by when they noticed the remnants of the fire, sparking intense emotions related to their family’s southern history.
Keinika said, “It immediately made me think of what my ancestors faced in the South, which is really sad.” Alyna added, “Schools teach us these things are part of the past and that we’re progressing, but this shows we aren’t there yet.”
The police have not clarified whether the incident was racially motivated. However, the sight of a burning cross, a symbol historically used against Black people, understandably disturbed many passersby.
Keinika also highlighted the potential danger, noting, “The fire could have escalated, catching nearby trees and endangering people in the vicinity.” Although the cross scorched a tree trunk and some leaves, the flames did not spread further. The Chicago Fire Department extinguished the fire before 2:30 p.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the action. Alyna reflected on the broader implications, stating, “Things like this start small and can grow, leading to bigger problems.” The duration and origin of the cross remain unknown, and no updates have been provided about potential suspects or arrests.
